That’s French for Biere

The awards ceremony for the Batailles de Bieres in Acadiana took place this past weekend and I’m extremely happy with how well I did in my first competition of 2022!

Texas had a really strong showing, with the Bay Area Mashtronauts and the Cane Island Alers tying in points for the top brew club (BAM winning on tiebreaks).

A friend of mine in the Redstick Brewmasters let me know that several of the Louisiana clubs had convinced the Dead Yeast Society to include Kentucky Commons this year, and there would be several entries, I’m proud that my version of a Kentucky Common took a Bronze. Hopefully this beer will continue to perform well for the time I’m able to include it in competitions.

This is also the first competition where I entered mead, and the first competition where I medaled for mead. Although, after finding out that mead medals don’t count on the Bayou Circuit for points, I’ll be saving my entry fees (and mead!) for the Lone Star Circuit. Very excited that my melomel did so well, this one was a cherry/apple mead with wildflower honey.

Finally, my Belgian beers, my Belgian Pale Ale got a bronze while my Saison got gold in the category. The saison was sent to the best of show round where it was awarded 1st place Best of Show! This is only my second best of show, and to have gotten it this time for a beer that I’ve put so much love and effort into was a great feeling. This is my second batch of this beer, making a couple of small tweaks this time over the last, and each time I make it the beer has to be bottle conditioned in Belgian beer bottles due to the high pressure needed to give it the effervescence that makes the beer shine. I can’t wait until the next awards ceremony at the end of the month for Operation Fermentation; hopefully my momentum continues to build!
